The Internal Revenue Service said Thursday it would offer toll-free telephone service for taxpayers on the last two Saturdays of tax season.

The IRS’s toll-free telephone lines at (800) 829-1040 will be open April 8 and 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (callers’ local time).

The tax deadline this year is Tuesday, April 18, because April 15 falls on a Saturday this year, which would give taxpayers until the following Monday to file. But Emancipation Day, a holiday in the District of Columbia, occurs on Monday, April 17, giving taxpayers around the country an extra day to file their taxes.

The IRS noted that its in-person Taxpayer Assistance Centers now require an appointment for most services. Instead of going directly to a local IRS office, taxpayers with a problem should first call (844) 545-5640 to reach an IRS representative, who can either help them resolve it over the phone or schedule an appointment to get them walk-in assistance.

The first two weeks of April are often the busiest times of the year for IRS telephone assistors, who will likely be answering thousands of calls per hour. The IRS pointed out that most tax questions can be answered online by using the tools on IRS.gov.
