Two University at Buffalo accounting graduates have been honored with the Institute of Internal Auditors’ Esther R. Sawyer Research Award, given to the winners of the Institute’s annual research manuscript competition. Notably, this year marked the first instance that two students of the same university received the award in the same year.
Kyle Januszkiewicz (BS ’16, MS ’17) and Wanyin Yan (BS ’16, MS ’17) received first and third place, respectively, in the research manuscript competition, which is open to all students in an IIA-endorsed internal auditing program.
Januszkiewicz’s essay, “The Roles and Future of Internal Audit in Governance, Risk and Compliance,” earned him a $5,000 prize as well as an all-expenses-paid trip to the IIA International Conference in Sydney, Australia to accept his award. Yan, originally of Guangzhou, China, earned a $500 prize.
“This was the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Australia, meet industry professionals from around the world and share the quality of education I received at the School of Management,” stated Januszkiewicz. “To me, this honor reflects the hard work I put into the manuscript, as well as the countless hours my professors dedicated to providing a top-tier accounting education.”
In addition to the contest winners, the University at Buffalo and their Accounting and Law Department will also receive $3,000 from the IIA’s Internal Audit Foundation to support their Master of Science in Accounting program.
