New NASBA chair Janice Gray shares vision for profession in inaugural address

The National Association State Boards of Accountancy has appointed Janice Gray, of Norman, Okla., chair of its 2018-19 board of directors. NASBA made the announcement during its 111th annual meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz., where the association also introduced its full roster of newly elected board members.

Janice L. Gray

During her inaugural address, Gray discussed what she called the four “E’s” of the accounting profession, along with the need for diversity, and the history of peer review.

Gray outlined her four E’s: education, exam, experience and ethics. She discussed how education requirements are changing, especially in the wake of new technology, and the evolution of the CPA exam. She also explained that regulators must remain engaged, reviewing necessary skill sets and determining needed changes to education, exam and experience requirements. Gray also discussed the rate of adoption of the AICPA’s Code of Conduct and suggested changes should be considered to language in the Uniform Accountancy Act.

Gray went on to explain that the profession needs to encourage minorities to become more involved in the regulation of accounting, mentioning that NASBA’s diversity efforts led her to be in her current position. She also shared her belief that there should be open communication between the Compliance Assurance Committee and the Peer Review Board in order to efficiently resolve issues, avoid conflict, and achieve open transparency.
