Highlights of some of our favorite tax-related blogs from the past week.

Mid-stream

  • The Income Tax School: Between doing returns and bathroom breaks and doing returns and remembering to breathe and doing returns, you likely enjoy little time to think about marketing in the middle of the season. Here, however, are four easy promotions to try. Put off breathing.
  • Solutions For CPA Firm Leaders: Some pundits say attracting new clients is the challenge. Others claim that keeping such clients is the real trick. Here are tips on how to do both.
  • TaxMama: Today Mama reminds us – especially this time of year – of the luster of the simple pencil.
  • TurboTax: After your clients exit the work world but before they try to live up to all those sailboat-filled retirement clichés, what to remind them about regarding finances in the golden years.
  • HR Block: Slippage of Mind Dept.: What to tell a client who hasn’t filed in a long, long, long time.

Old stories

  • Don’t Mess With Taxes: “And once again this election season, it comes back to Donald J. Trump.” Seems the winner of this election year’s Best Blustery Campaign is now last among major Republican candidates to release his past returns.
  • Tax Girl: You have to pay taxes on income from your side business, period. Oddly, the tax authorities’ first concern doesn’t seem to be whether you stole your merchandise.
  • Taxable Talk: Remember that scene in “Gandhi” where they beat the crap out of the Mohandas and he still keeps carrying on with passive resistance? Same thing here, except preparer instead of guru and permanent injunction instead of Imperial British authorities.
  • Federal Tax Crimes: A look at recent IRS efforts to get UBS Group to turn over records on an account in Singapore held by a U.S. citizen, “potentially opening a new front against offshore tax evasion beyond Switzerland.”
  • Due Diligence: In this week’s collection: “TIC Time Bomb Looming – $30 Billion in Loans Coming Due”; “Prison Sentence Cut in Largest DBE Fraud in U.S. History”; “Competitor Cheating Uncle Sam? Qui Tam Is the Answer”; “David v Goliath Redux – Whistleblower Takes On ATT”; and “Whistleblower Gets $315k in Anti- Kickback Case.”
  • IRS Problem Solver Blog: While we’re on the topics, “How to Get Your Criminal Records Expunged or Sealed.”

Joint endeavors

  • Tax Vox: Tax incentives remain the candy in the window for many cash-strapped states looking to bolster economic development. Blogger Norton Francis examines the drawbacks of this tempting tool.
  • Taxes at About.com: “Businesses in the medical marijuana and cannabis industry face unique and often daunting tax problems.” (Disdaining smart remarks, we refuse to take any more pot shots at this topic.)
  • Procedurally Taxing: You can turn your pockets inside out and make like the Monopoly man on the Chance card all you like, but bankruptcy is a nuanced matter, especially when it involves taxes.
