Certify acquires European expense management company Captio

Expense management software provider Certify has acquired Captio, a provider of the same services in Europe, for an undisclosed sum.

The buy is Certify’s first outside North America. The company bought the TE company Abacus this year, and was itself bought and merged in with Nexonia, ExpenseWatch and Tallie last year, an effort by K1 Investment Management to create a true competitor to Concur.

This deal allows Certify to offer its expense management products to large, midsize and small business customers throughout Europe and specifically in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy, where Captio reportedly has a strong customer base and a growing presence. The combined company now has over 10,000 customers in over 90 countries, Certify claims.

Captio is based in Spain and was founded in 2012. Captio offers an end to end cloud-based expense management platform with mobile capabilities and the ability to comply with specific country-based taxation requirements. Co-founder Joel Vicient and Captio’s in-country managers will join Certify’s leadership team.

According to Certify, the combined company will continue working on the current product lines and serving existing customers with an improved service offering via the merger.

The Captio buy is also part of a move by Certify to grow its presence outside North America. In 2017, Certify expanded its relationship with U.K.-based Sage Software to provide enhanced product integrations and services to shared customers. Earlier this year, Certify announced the formation of a new integration with Western Union to provide international business payment capabilities to Certify customers with operations outside the United States.

“Captio has captured significant market share in Europe through a combination of great technology, first-class customer service and skilled leadership,” said Robert Neveu, president and CEO of Certify, in a statement. “They have a strong and growing customer base, and a great reputation. We are excited to bring them into the Certify family, and we look forward to working with Joel and his team to build the Certify brand throughout Europe.”
